When I first considered getting LASIK in Japan, one of my biggest questions was: Is LASIK permanent? Or will I eventually need glasses again?

Yes — your eyes can still change over time, but not because the LASIK “wore off.” Here’s how it works:

• Aging: As we get older (usually after 40), our eyes naturally go through changes. Many people — LASIK or not — develop presbyopia, which affects near vision.
• Hormones, genetics, or health conditions can also affect your vision later in life.
• If your prescription was very strong before LASIK (like mine!), there’s a small chance of regression, where vision becomes slightly blurry again years later.

But overall, most people enjoy many years — even decades — of clear vision after LASIK.

My Personal Thoughts After LASIK

Honestly, right after the procedure, I was super nervous. I kept thinking: What if it doesn’t last? What if I go back to wearing glasses in a few years?

But now, almost 3 weeks post-surgery, I already feel a huge difference. I wake up and don’t reach for my glasses anymore. I can see clearly — and it still feels a bit surreal. That alone makes the whole process worth it.

And even if I might need reading glasses one day when I’m older… I’m still so glad I did it.

Will I Need LASIK Again?

In rare cases, a LASIK enhancement (a second procedure) is done if your vision changes or if the correction wasn’t perfect the first time. But this is uncommon, especially if your vision was stable before the surgery.

That’s why it’s so important to go to a reputable clinic and get a proper eye evaluation first.

Final Thoughts: Is LASIK Worth It?

If you’re asking whether LASIK is permanent — yes, the core changes to your cornea are permanent.
But no one can predict exactly how your eyes will age in the next 20 or 30 years.

For me, LASIK is 100% worth it. I feel freer, more active, and more confident without glasses.

Just remember: LASIK isn’t mandatory for everyone. But if you think your life would feel better and easier without glasses, it might be one of the best investments you ever made.
