If you’re like me, you probably wondered: What if my vision gets worse again after LASIK? Can I do it again? This is actually a very common question for anyone thinking long-term about their eyesight.

Is LASIK Permanent?

First of all, LASIK is designed to be a permanent correction. The laser reshapes your cornea, and that change is permanent. However, your eyes can still change over time, especially due to aging, genetics, or certain eye conditions.

For example:

  • Some people may develop presbyopia (age-related farsightedness) in their 40s or 50s.
  • Others might experience a slight regression in nearsightedness or astigmatism.

So yes, LASIK is permanent in its correction, but your vision isn’t guaranteed to stay the same forever.

Can You Get LASIK More Than Once?

Yes, enhancement LASIK (a second procedure) is possible in many cases.

But here’s the catch:

  • Your cornea must still be thick enough for another reshaping.
  • The changes in your vision must be stable (not still changing).
  • A doctor will run tests to make sure you’re still a good candidate.

If you had a strong prescription the first time (like me), your cornea may already be quite thin, so doing it again isn’t always an option.

When Do People Usually Need a Second LASIK?

Most people don’t need one. But when they do, it’s usually:

  • A few months after surgery (if the first result wasn’t optimal).
  • Or 10+ years later, if there’s natural regression due to aging.

LASIK enhancement is not common, but clinics like Shinagawa LASIK Center do offer it when needed.

Would I Do It Again?

Personally, I would. My life post-LASIK has been incredibly more convenient—no glasses, no contact lenses, just clear vision. If in the future my vision changes again and I’m still a candidate, I’d definitely consider it.

But of course, it depends on your eyes and your priorities.

Final Thoughts

LASIK is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but it can be done again under the right conditions. The best thing to do? Talk to your eye doctor, get regular checkups, and monitor your vision over time.
