If you’re someone with high myopia—like me—you might be wondering if LASIK is even possible for your eyes. I had -7.0 on my left eye and -5.5 on my right, plus astigmatism. Not exactly the easiest case, right?

Here’s what I experienced when I tried to get LASIK in Japan, and what I wish I knew earlier.

Turned Down at My First Clinic

Before getting LASIK, I decided to check with Senshinkai Clinic in Osaka. They offered a free consultation, so I thought—why not?

It turns out they only accepted patients with prescriptions up to -6.0. Since my left eye was -7.0, they told me I wasn’t eligible. That really got me worried:

Would every clinic reject me just because my vision was “too bad”?

Accepted at Shinagawa LASIK Clinic

Thankfully, I didn’t give up. I checked another clinic—Shinagawa LASIK Center in Osaka—and things turned out very differently.

After their initial screening, they said my cornea was thick enough and that I was a good candidate for LASIK. Huge relief!

I ended up going with their Amaris 750S laser system. It’s one of the more advanced machines available today, using high-speed laser treatment that’s super precise and customized. (For those curious: yes, it’s an all-laser LASIK technique.)

The Surgery : Quick Results, Minor Blurriness

During surgery, I couldn’t see clearly, of course. But right after it ended, I could already make out shapes and lights better than before. It still felt a little foggy, kind of like a thin layer of mist or condensation.

But after I went home and got some sleep, I woke up and could see clearly. That moment was incredible.

Is LASIK Worth It for High Prescription?

If your prescription is similar to mine—or even worse—you might be scared of being told “no.” But honestly, not all clinics are the same. Just because one place turns you down, it doesn’t mean LASIK is off the table for you.

If your cornea is thick enough and your eyes are healthy overall, LASIK might still be an option. I’d say: don’t rule it out just because of a big number on your glasses.

For me, LASIK was totally worth it. With my prescription, I don’t feel like I wasted anything—quite the opposite. It changed my daily life.
